Challenging Myself (and Maybe Regretting it!)

I am in the trenches.

Sometime in September, I signed up for a 90-day writing challenge, thinking that it would be a fitting way to finish the year with the same energy I started. After all, I began 2024 by joining a writer's group with the goal of releasing my first book this year. Somehow I managed to put out three amazing stories, so what could go wrong with a few more goals? Turns out, a lot.

My goals were easy:

  • October: Finish draft two of Series book 1 and have it ready for beta readers. Finish plotting/planning Book 2.
  • November: Draft book 2.
  • December: Finish draft two of book 2 and have it ready for beta readers.

Intense but manageable right? Well...

Between editing one manuscript, planning my November draft, and marketing my Halloween release, Hallowed, this first month of the challenge has taught me a hard lesson: just because I can do a lot doesn’t mean I should. I’ve also had a bout of sickness, my dog—not one to be outstaged—also got sick and overall I was reminded that there are only so many hours in a day, and days in a 90-day challenge!

Still, there’s something about pushing these limits that feels necessary—maybe even inspiring. Even if I’ve bitten off more than I can chew, I’m hopeful. By year’s end, I still aim to have both the first two books connected to Falling for Forever ready for beta readers. And who knows, if I can draft this new book in November, I might just meet my wildest goals yet.

So, tell me: anyone else ever take on a challenge they maybe underestimated? I’d love to hear how you kept going when you realized you’d signed up for more than you bargained for! Slide into my DMs or use my contact form—I'm always looking for an excuse to take a break!

Until next time!
